Privacy Rights: The 21st Century’s Civil Right Movement? The Filmmaker, The Detective & the Producer

Iconic filmmaker Julie Dash (Daughters of the Dust) and first recipient of Eos World Fund’s commitment to make her latest project, will be discussing her next limited film series, CYPHER a film noir, suspense thriller capturing the world of encryption specialists who hold the key to protecting global privacy rights, the civil rights movement of the 21st century.

Private Detective/Investigator Monica Morton, Eos World Fund Advisory Board member will elaborate on the urgency: Are we already close to living in an Orwellian universe because every citizens’ privacy rights are steadily being eradicated every day? It is Detective Monica Morton’s contention that nobody truly appreciates the ticking time bomb protecting global privacy rights.

Rachel Watanabe-Batton, an Eos World Fund Advisory Board member and Producer, will be discussing with filmmaker Julie Dash the genesis of her new limited series CYPHER.

Facebook SEEN Panel & Workshop | The Future of Storytelling

Blackhouse co-founder, Brickson Diamond, hosts a roundtable with diverse directors, producers and writers about how they are leveraging digital platforms to build their brand, uncover new audiences, and pave the way for new models of distribution. The panel will be followed by an interactive workshop focused on leveraging Facebook and Instagram’s best practices and tools for mobile storytelling to help independent filmmakers get their work seen.

“Traveling While Back” Premiere & Conversation

Op-Docs, The New York Times Opinion section’s series of award-winning short documentaries, returns to the Sundance Film Festival for the world premiere of our 300th Op-Doc, “Traveling While Black.” The virtual reality film, directed by Roger Ross Williams and made in collaboration with Felix & Paul Studios and Oculus, immerses viewers in African-Americans’ struggles to travel freely around the U.S., from restrictions in the pre-civil rights era to the challenges minorities face today. Roger Ross Williams, who won an Academy Award for his short documentary “Music by Prudence” and directed the 2016 Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated documentary “Life Animated,” will be in conversation with renowned author and Times journalist Brent Staples, a member of the Times editorial board, on the history behind the film, the issues it portrays and how VR shines a light on the topic. Oculus will provide VR headsets to view the film.
